sayings of the not-so-wise

today wasn't a bad day. i think it's a good thing when i can look back over a long work day and not remember much of anything. that means i didn't get too emotional in a bad way over the crap of the day.
.
for the last two days, i've hit route 59 north on my final leg into akron feeling like i'm gliding just above the road's surface. i think it's the combination of no radio noise filling the background and no bumps in the pavement. mr. spacely thinks i'm on drugs.
.
i've left home the last few days about the same time the sun is headed to work in our neck of the woods. before i leave the house, i've been hiding sarah little notes (aww, how cute). she has this funny habit of grabbing any piece of parchment handy to write down recipes, phone numbers, directions, etc., so i wasn't surprised when i got home today and saw directions written on the back of yesterday's love note. i mean, most ladies would cherish something like that forever, sickening their girlfriends with the "look what my little pookey wookey did for me." not sarah. i love how practical she is. recycle: that's her motto. maybe i'm way off base on the female stereotype there... maybe they don't all pet name their husbands 'pookey wookey'. hey, it's not like i have the wisdom of solomon at my fingertips...
.
so i closed out proverbs today. some of the cool stuff that hit my brain is as follows (i encourage you to read the verse before my commentary):
.
proverbs 21:13 - this is essentially the consequences of the golden rule. this made me remember a thought i had recently about how god follows the golden rule. i think too often we get caught up on making sure others are obeying the rule, and we'll occasionally think that we need to do the same. but god follows it. look at how he treats us. isn't that how he wants us to treat him in return?
.
proverbs 22:1a - i would much rather be known than to have all the money in the world. title ranks higher than paycheck in my book.
.
proverbs 22:2 - take two opposite types of people and label them with one word each. take those two words and substitute them for "rich" and "poor" in this passage... pretty powerful stuff. next time you remember the "god loves everyone" cliche, think about the person who is not you to a tee... he loves them too.
.
proverbs 25:2 - in researching the evolution of sex (not the act, the gender pieces), sarah and i came across some interesting stuff on darwin. apparently, he had embraced christianity at some point during his life, turning away later on b/c he couldn't understand why god had put such amazing creatures far out in the oceans where man cannot see them. i think this verse explains that, so maybe darwin didn't read this one. and in case you're wondering, there's too much debate out there as to whether or not darwin became a christian on his deathbed. i'm a skeptic. but then again, what would it change if he had?
.
proverbs 26:28a - if you lie to someone, you hate them (me paraphrasing).
.
that last verse reminded me of something from yesterday, but don't ask how my mind made the connection... oh, lying. we were discussing lying with the girls over dinner. i decided to be bold with the truth and said something like, "yes, jesus does not like it when we lie. and actually, god says in the bible that liars will not go to heaven." before i could say anything else, alex's eyes welled with tears. we then had to discuss forgiveness and repentence. she was later gazing at the ceiling saying, "jesus, i'm sorry for lying. i want to go to heaven." right on alex.
.
proverbs 28:1 - i wasn't thinking of a war scene like many may. i was thinking about the day-to-day interaction with people. when it comes to conflict, i tuck tail. i'm wicked.
.
proverbs 30:7-9 - my prayer.
.
proverbs 31:10-31 is just about my wife. she'll tell you otherwise, but she's a liar. not really, but she does have a false sense of reality when it comes to looking at herself in the mirror. i've changed the words of a familiar song for her from "you're so vain... you probably think this song is about you" into "you're not vain... you probably doubt this song is about you". i love you sarai.
.
so hopefully this has given you more insight than my last few blogs combined. proverbs is a sweet read, and it has something in there that applies to almost everything having to do with life. so if you're ever in a bind, open it.
.
a picture of my wife. this was taken in new orleans, january 2006. she's eating (well, it looks like attempting to eat) lunch as we break from gutting houses. though she'll hate me for posting this, i think it's a cute and funny, yet well-composed picture (photo credit: mr. forte):
