before i begin on today, there have been a couple of things alex has said lately that i've forgotten to comment on. the first was at dinner last night. we had mashed potatoes, broccoli, and meat loaf. she didn't ask, she told me that mashed potatoes came from clouds. boy, was my mom wrong! then her prayer a night or two ago before bed time went something like this: "dear jesus, the world does not revolve around me. it revolves around mommy and daddy." oh boy... we got that teaching wrong!
.
then a new comment from al-dogg came today. since daddy's going to spend his whole weekend disc golfing with mr. matthew (oh yeah!), i took this afternoon and all of tomorrow off to spend with sarah and the girls. so today we went to a beaver pond on the erie canal tow path. before leaving for the short trip, a dialogue between alex and myself went something like this:
alex: "we're going to the beaver pond."
me: "oh yeah?"
alex: "yeah. we're gonna throw sticks at the beavers." ... not sure where she got that one.
.
anyway, so it was a good trip to the beaver pond today, where we met a very nice elderly man named bob who had some neat pictures of a red-shouldered hawk he had taken the day before. in our short relationship with bob, i found him to be remarkable.
.
over dishes tonight, i thanked sarah for being a great wife. i try to do this often, but it doesn't always come out. the main reason i thanked her was for letting me go all weekend. and she's not just letting me go... this was mainly her idea. however, i can't say i argued too hard about it! she's still awesome!
.
we also discussed the difference of then and now and how god interacts with us between those times. so in king david's time, there were prophets. today, he almost seems silent, and you don't hear of prophets. in reading through the old testament, i told sarah that i've really been praying lately for god to make me a prophet in today's world. later on, sarah made a good, encouraging point. back in those days, they needed prophets to hear from god b/c 'bibles' weren't as plentiful as they are today. so there probably isn't a need for a prophet as badly in today's world since we have god's word in almost every home and practically every book store... and wal-mart. maybe god has something better in mind for me that being a prophet.
.
we also talked about how it's great to look at jesus' death on the cross and subsequent resurrection, but that it's probably more important to see what it symbolized. in reading through the old testament, you get a great glimpse of life in those days. sacrificing daily for the sins of you and your people. jesus was just that, a sacrificial lamb. and when we look at that in the context of the jewish culture of the day, it means a lot in today's context too. i don't have to kill a sheep or two regularly to have my sins done away with. jesus was my sacrifice, once and for all.
.
favorite bible verse read today: "oh my god, i am too ashamed and disgraced to lift up my face to you, my god, because our sins are higher than our heads and our guilt has reached to the heavens." (ezra 9:6)
